Our favorite Caribbean dishes, such as ‘buss up shot’, doubles, rice, sada roti, fry aloo, pelau, and more, can have a significant impact on our diet. While these dishes are delicious and satisfying, they often contain high levels of carbohydrates, fats, and oils. For example, doubles, a beloved street food made with fried bara and chickpeas, is heavily saturated with oils and sauces and lack sufficient vegetables for balance. Additionally, dishes like fry aloo (fried potatoes) and pelau can be high in calories and saturated fats if not prepared with lean meats and minimal oil. While these foods are enjoyed in moderation as part of a balanced diet, their frequent consumption without consideration for portion sizes and nutritional content can contribute to weight gain and other health issues.

However, the popular belief that Carbohydrates are ultimately bad for your health is proven to be false. A balanced, varied diet that includes all food groups is crucial. There is high risks associated with excluding entire food groups, such as nutrient deficiencies and the development of cravings, which can derail our health goals. Cutting out Carbs, for instance can actually affect your aim to develop a healthy lifestyle. Carbs play a major role in brain function and can prevent fatigue and brain fog. So, no need to cut out your favorite Caribbean dishes BUT moderation and balance is key!


Hydration & Fast Food

Hydration is also KEY! It is recommended that water intake levels are 3 liters for women and 4 liters for men. Interestingly, a significant portion of our water intake should come from fruits, not just from drinking water. This approach not only aids in hydration but also provides essential nutrients. Fast food, with its convenience and tastiness, has become a staple in many diets. However, these meals often come at a cost to our health, being high in fats, salts, sugars, and calories, and low in essential nutrients. The prevalence of fast food contributes to the rising rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs), emphasizing the need for a more mindful approach to our eating.

Practical Tips For Healthier Eating

Despite the challenges, it’s possible to enjoy the convenience of fast food and your Caribbean Favorites without compromising on nutrition. Here are some actionable tips gleaned from our discussion:

Choose Healthier Options: Go for menu items that are grilled instead of fried and packed with vegetables. Even fast food chains like Pita Pit, and Subway often offer salads, wraps, and other healthier alternatives. 

Customize Your Order: Ask for less sauce/ dressings, choose whole grain bread, and add extra vegetables to your meals. Small changes can significantly reduce calorie intake and increase nutrient density.

Control Portions: Resist the urge to upsize your meal or choose “combos”. Stick to smaller portions and complement them with a side salad or fruit to increase satiety and nutrient intake. For instance, limiting yourself to only two slices of pizza or one doubles (when it’s usually two) with a complement of a salad to balance the meal is a really effective method for building a healthy habit.

Plan Ahead: If you anticipate eating fast food, adjust your other meals to be more nutrient-dense. This balance can help mitigate the impact of less healthy choices.

Stay Hydrated: Choose water or homemade juices without added sugars over sugary sodas. Proper hydration is crucial for digestion and overall health.

Incorporate Healthy Habits: Pairing a healthy diet with regular physical activity can enhance your overall health and help manage weight. Pay attention to hunger and fullness cues to avoid overeating. Eating slowly and mindfully can help you enjoy your food more and prevent overindulgence. Regular physical activity, listening to your body’s hunger cues, and eating mindfully can enhance the benefits of a balanced diet and contribute to long-term health.

View Treats as Occasional: Allow yourself the occasional indulgence in less healthy options as part of a balanced diet, rather than completely off-limits, to avoid feeling deprived.

Incorporate Variety: Ensure your diet includes a wide range of foods from all food groups to get a variety of nutrients and keep meals interesting. Avoid cutting out entire food groups for the sake of “healthy eating” and prioritized balanced meals using the food plate method or “the eatwell plate” to the right.
